Wheat Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina)

In contrast to the threat presented by stem rust, wheat leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina is the most important plant disease in Canada now. Currently, it is the most damaging pathogen of wheat, Canada's number one crop. It can cause losses of up to $100 million dollars a year and the level of resistance provided by the introduction of resistant gene alleles into elite wheat varieties has not lead to the level of protection required to completely mitigate these losses. In spite of the annual risk to wheat production the level of containment required for Puccinia triticina is limited; this pathogen is prevalent in Canada and the limited pathogenesis trials proposed here will not increase the risk to wheat production.
