Editing

I am currently involved in two editing projects. One project, in collaboration with Brad Martin of Yukon College, is a book of essays on the environmental history of northern Canada. Brad and I have invited more than a dozen of the finest historians of the north to contribute essays for the volume. We will be hosting an authors' workshop at Trent University in October 2011. The second project is a special section of the Journal of the History of Biology, that will examine the history of field sciences in the 20th century. I and four other historians are contributing essays to this collection.

Between 2005 and 2008 I was Ecology Editor of the New Dictionary of Scientific Biography. This multi-volume addition to the original DSB appeared in February 2008. It includes biographies of twenty prominent ecologists. See the list of these ecologists. These ecologists were chosen with the assistance of the history of science and environmental history communities. I also wrote two of the biographies, on Pierre Dansereau and Charles Elton.

I am currently a Contributing Editor for Alternatives Journal. My chief contribution to the journal is a regular column, "Political Science," in which I discuss topics relating to how science is used in environmental politics.

I am also an Associate Editor of the Urban History Review. As Guest Editor, I prepared a special theme issue that appeared in Fall 2005. Read the call for papers for this issue, "The Environmental History of Canadian Cities" , see the table of contents of the issue, and read my introductory essay, "The Nature of Cities: Perspectives in Canadian Urban Environmental History".

Over the years I have been involved in a variety of other editing projects. This includes several years as Editor of Scientia Canadensis: Journal of the History of Canadian Science and Technology, as Associate Editor of Alternatives Journal and as Editor (2000 to 2003) of the Journal of Canadian Studies.

My work as Editor of Scientia Canadensis included editing a theme issue on the "History of Science and the Environment in Canada", published in 2000. Read my introduction to this issue, "Four Perspectives on the History of Science and the Environment in Canada" .

As Associate Editor of Alternatives Journal, I contributed to several issues, including one on Biodiversity issues in Canada. Read my introduction to this issue, "Diverse by Nature" .

As Editor of the Journal of Canadian Studies I wrote introductory essays for several issues. Click on the following titles to read these essays:

At the Journal of Canadian Studies I also edited theme issues on "History and the Canadian Environment: Interpretations and Transformations" (vol. 37:2, Summer 2002) and "Science and Politics in Canada" (vol. 37:3, Fall 2002).
