Bright motivated students with a strong interest in learning about the ecology of flowing waters can contact me about graduate opportunities. Please review the type of research projects we do and some of our recent publications. Research ideas should be in related to lab themes so that we can provide you with the funds, literature, and personnel contacts needed. I prefer to have 2-4 graduate students working in my lab, with a mixture of Masters and Ph.D. students with an overlap of experienced and newer students. In many cases I will have a specific project and support for a Master position. For a PhD there is more latitude and I expect the student to develop his/her thesis more independently. If possible, I will employ the student to assist with fieldwork before starting their degree. I interested only students who are truly dedicated to achieving their graduate and career goals. I expect them to work hard without being pushed by me. In return, I will work hard for their future success by introducing them to the right people and by giving them the best training I can. The student-mentor relationship is a two-way street. You must be eager and motivated. Expect to get out only what you put into the graduate school experience. It is wise to contact the Environmental and Life Sciences Graduate Program for admissions requirements before we discuss ideas. Currently a 78% during the last 10 credits is required. I have little say in the matter of acceptance if your grades are not above this threshold. I may encourage more students to apply than I expect to accept. Send me a detailed e-mail message two months to a year before applications are due that describes your interests, career goals, and academic status (grade scores). I prefer that potential students meet and discuss graduate opportunities with me before formally applying to Trent ELSP. When you do formally apply, please state on your application letter that you will be working with my lab. I encourage potential students to meet separately with my current graduate students.
